52 Photos: Wide Open Spaces

Space Needle plus mountains

I loved it when they painted the Space Needle “galaxy gold” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the World’s Fair. This is the view I have one block from my apartment. And while I do enjoy a good glimpse of the Needle, it’s always the Olympic mountain range behind it that takes my breath away.

One summer day we overheard two bikers as they passed this view – on a day when the mountains were particularly stunning and the Needle was its usual white. One said to the other: “Wow! Look at the … Space Needle.” We’ve added that to our repertoire of inside jokes!

And a couple of other “wide open spaces”:

I’ve been thinking a lot about Thailand, because it’s been three years now since I visited. This picture was taken in Ayuttaya, out in the countryside:

And this is Mt. Blanc, taken in France:

When I was in my very early teens, it was my turn to go on a big trip with my grandparents. This was not something I wanted or asked for, but it was my turn. Don’t get me wrong, I love traveling and visiting new places, just not with my grandmother. She and I never got on and the idea of being trapped in a truck with her for a month was not pleasant. We left Sacramento bound for Vancouver Island in Canada, with a few obligatory stops along the way. I was looking forward to seeing the view from the top of the Space Needle, but to this day I don’t even remember what I saw. Having blocked out most of that trip from my memory, perhaps I should retrace our steps someday, fill in the gaps and really see what’s along the way.

I hope you will come back to Seattle! I find I love looking AT the Space Needle more than looking out from it. Would be more than happy to play tour guide for you, Cairn!

Thanks so much, Rebecca! And I feel like this picture doesn’t even do the view justice. I hope you will come visit some day!

I love that they painted it, looks so much better and wow at the mountain range. The landscape of Thailand looks stunning. I hope you find a way to return one day soon and take lots more amazing piccies!

Lou, I loved the galaxy gold on the Space Needle. Was quite bummed when they repainted it back to white. Thanks for stopping by! I want to go back to SE Asia. I will find my way!
